Recycled Plastic Necklace Tutorial

How To
You will need:
Sissors
Hole Punch
Clear stiff plastic packaging (I used the lids and bottom from a clear plastic vegatable carton*)
Beads (I used graduated sizes, but any size and combination would work well)
Cord or string (I used elasticized)

*I wish that I'd washed and dried the plastic more carefully. It's very hard to get water spots off of a lot of small discs.

Step one: Count out the beads you intend to use. You will need the same number of plastic discs, plus one more. Use a small cardboard circle as a rough template. Cut in roughly oval organic shapes and vary the sizes somewhat.

Step two: At the narrower end of each disc punch a small hole.

Step three: Arrange your discs in a row by size, starting with the smallest ones at each end and working toward the middle (the middle disc being the largest in size).

Step four: Cut cord to length (allow enough to be able to tie a bow in the back).

Step five:  String the beads and discs starting with the smallest (or 1st if all your beads are of a uniform size) and alternating bead, disc, bead, disc until complete.

Step six: place a knot before the 1st bead and after the last bead to hold them all in place.

  1. I really like the clear plastic. It does not scream recycled and yet it is clever and pretty.

  3. Thankyou, Melissa!

And yes, Rachel, very good for discouraging unwanted body contact (I hadn't really thought of that aspect).
