Tutorial: How to Make Pom Poms
You may call them pom poms, pom-poms, pompoms, pom pons or pom-pons...Here's how to make them:
#1: Cut two doughnut shaped pieces of cardboard. The size of the the pompom will is controlled by the distance across the cardboard portion (minus the "hole") not the total distance across the entire doughnut.
Example: if you cut a circle 4" across and cut a 1" hole in the middle, your pompom will be approx. 3" across.
#2: Stack your cardboard doughnuts together to form a sandwich. Prepare your yarn for wrapping the doughnut by make a couple of small balls. They must be small enough to go through the holes in the centers of the doughnuts. Tie off the first ball (go around both doughnuts, tying them together).
#3: Begin wrapping the doughnuts with yarn. If you run out of yarn on your first ball, just start with and new ball and tie the
ends of yarn together.
#4: When you are done wrapping, tie off the ends and cut away the remaining ball of yarn. If you are making multiple pompoms and wish them to be the same size, you may need to either measure how much yarn you use, or count the number of wraps you make to ensure that all the pompoms are of the same fullness. The more yarn/number of wraps the denser and fluffier your pompoms will be.
#5: Begin cutting the pompom off the doughnut by carefully clipping around the outside edge.
#6: Take another piece of yarn and slip it in between the two doughnuts. Pull tight and tie.
#7: Slip your doughnuts off the pompom. Save them to use again.
#8: Fluff out your pompom and trim away any stray of uneven ends.
