Last Minute Handmade Gift Idea #4: Tea Cup Pin Cushion

Pin cushions make great gifts for seamstresses. One can never have too many. You could use a regular tea cup, but I prefer the simplicity (and small size) of a green tea cup.

How-to:

You will need: a tea cup, steel wool*, fiber fill (or other stuffing) and a fabric circle. Cut a fabric circle with a diameter of approx. 3 times the diameter of the tea cup. This does not need to be exact. You probably have a bowl in your cupboard that will be suitable as something to trace around.

*Steel wool will keep pins sharp and prevent rusting.

Using a needle and thread, make a line of gathering stitches all the way around the circumference of the circle.

Leave the needle and thread attached to the circle. Lay fiber fill and steel wool in the center of the fabric circle. Use enough stuffing to completely fill the circle. Make sure that the steel wool is insulated from the fabric (if you don't buffer the steel wool with fiber fill, bits of steel wool will start working themselves out of the fabric cover later on).

Pull the gathering stitch up tight to form a bundle. Make a few stabilizing stitches through the edges of the gathered fabric, knot and cut off  excess thread.

Squeeze a generous amount of glue (I used Gorilla Glue) into the bottom of the cup. Press the cushion into the cup and position in place. Leave undisturbed until the glue is completely dry.
