Last Minute Handmade Gift Idea #6: Fabric Bird Ornament

The body of this little bird ornament can be made of any type of fabric, but the eyes and wings should be made of felt or some other material that will not ravel.

This bird was finished off as a tree ornament, but without the hanging loop it could be a soft toy or (in multiples) a cute addition to a wreath or garland.

How-to:

#1: Print off pattern. If you print directly on card stock or cereal box card, you can trace around the pieces with a marker. Cutting out from a paper pattern can be tricky with such small pieces.

#2: Cut out the eyes and wings. Leave the body pieces uncut (after marking outlines with a Sharpie).

#3: Using yarn (I used crewel yarn) or embroidery floss, sew on the eyes (use satin stitch) and the wings (use chain stitch). If you are pressed for time, just sew an eye and wing to one side.

#4: Cut out the body pieces.

#5: Place right sides together and pin in place. Machine sew together, leaving a 3  inch (7cm) gap to turn and insert the stuffing.

#6: After sewing, trim excess fabric from seam allowance (don't trim around the opening).

#7: Turn and stuff.

#8: Hand stitch closed the opening.

#9: Using yarn or ribbon, add a hanging loop to the top of the bird's body.
