    Not sure if you aware of this, but it is actually against the law to take things from the beach when you visit. If you Google it you can find quite a lot of information.

    Seashell collecting from the beach may indeed be illegal in some places.

    In North America, with the exception of a few small speacially protected fragile beaches, collecting uninhabited shells or other non-living objects from beaches is perfectly legal and is regarded by most people as a ecologically harmless hobby.

    The thing to avoid, from a environmental standpoint, is buying commercially harvested shells. These shells are almost always still alive when they are taken and are very often harvested in a way that is disruptive to the beach ecosystem.
